Profile
John Frederick Bell is a Ph.D. candidate in American Studies at Harvard University. His dissertation, “Opening the Campus: Evangelicalism, Abolitionism, and the Dilemmas of Equality in American Higher Education,” investigates ideas and practices of educational equality in the nineteenth century by examining the interplay of religion, race, and gender in abolitionist colleges, the first to admit students irrespective of race and sex.
